Belgium at a glance
Belgium is a federal state in Western Europe with 11,763,650 inhabitants on 1 January 2024 and an area of about 30,663 km². It borders the Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg and France, and has a short North Sea coast of about 65 km. The capital is Brussels.
The country is divided into three regions: Flanders in the north, where Dutch is spoken; Wallonia in the south, French-speaking with a small German-speaking area in the east; and the bilingual Brussels-Capital Region. Flanders and Wallonia each have five provinces. Since the mergers of 1 January 2025, Belgium has 565 municipalities: 285 in Flanders, 261 in Wallonia and 19 in Brussels.
